Do Walls Have to be Flat?

Apparently, not!! Did anyone watch "Esquire's Bachelor Pad" this past weekend? It was amazing, but a little too "bachelor" for me. What really intrigued me was the work by POD Design group. They built walls with a serpentine metal feature and a "sexy ghost". (You have to watch it, to know what that means). I decided to check out their website and found some very cool design projects. The treatment for a space deprived loft, really caught my eye.

An "armature" wall was built as a way to add extra ledges, wine storage, space for a medicine cabinet and even shower! By adding pieces of cut plywood in varying sizes and at varying angles, a plain wall becomes a focal point with a purpose.

I like the photos showing the structural parts of the wall. Above the wall looks like a beautiful honeycomb, below the plywood pieces come together like an origami piece.

The Rothko Chapel, a Houston Gem.

I'm so exited about this post, and I can't believe it took me so long to write it! A few days ago, I was chatting with a friend and mentioned the Rothko Chapel. She had never seen it. I suddenly realized that most people I mention the chapel to, have never seen it. So, I'm hoping to do something about that! I lived in Houston for years, before discovering the chapel, too. It impacted me in a way, I will never forget!

The Chapel was the brain-child of John and Dominique de Menil. Houston art lovers are familiar with the de Menil's and their amazing contributions to Houston's culture. They were responsible for bringing modern art and architecture to Texas. It was the de Menil's idea to commission a space where God, art, and people of all faiths could come together...WOW!!! The idea seems so extravagant, but it was made a reality in a beautifully minimalist manner. Thanks to the majestic yet sober panels that fill the small sanctuary. I haven't found any photos that show just how amazing this art is. Its as if their beauty can't be captured. They just have to be experienced in person. I will admit to sitting on those plain wooden benches and weeping. Ha, that makes sound a little bit crazy! Later, I learned that Rothko was quoted as saying, "The fact that people break down and cry when confronted with my pictures shows that I can communicate those basic human emotions..the people who weep before my pictures are having the same religous experience I had when painting them".

Even before walking into the building, I was struck by a sense of serenity. There is a large reflection pond and in the center is the Broken Obelisk sculpture by Barnett Newman. Quite amazing!

I don't think I'll go on and on, because plenty of people have written about the Chapel and in more depth than I can go into. But, I will say that any one who sees this post and can get to the Rothko Chapel...go as soon as you can!!

Forward and Backward

It is a new year and I'm drawn into reflection and pushed toward expectation. I look back at the last couple of tumultuous years and I find myself in an unforeseen place. I'm such a dramatically different person, that its difficult to put into words.

Two years ago, this month, I lost my father. We had a very special bond and I believed that from him, I inherited my creativity. When he was gone, You could say that my life went into a sort of tailspin. It seemed a large vacuum opened up and sucked away the meaning behind much of my life. I mean, most of my habits, interests, and routines were left without significance or purpose. I kept saying, "What does this mean, anyway?" "Why am I doing the things I do, what's the point?" I was struck with how short and precious life is. I was forced to question the little life I had made for myself. Was I using it wisely? Could I use it for more? If I decided to live to the absolute best of my ability, what would that look like? Where would I wind up? Although, confusing; I decided to veer off my comfortable route and start down "the path less traveled".

There's no way I could explain all that I have experienced in this one post, because lets face it...who would read all that? I'm bringing this up now, because I feel I'm at a place where I understand myself more. I sort of found myself again, but I'm different. It seems time to share what I've learned. I haven't blogged much during these two years, because design and interiors no longer have the same meaning to me. I've struggled with how to talk about deeper things on a "design blog". I still don't have an answer. I think I just have to make a sort of break. I will explain myself better in future posts. Don't get me wrong, I still plan on writing about design, but with the perspective that interiors should have a deeper purpose and not just be nice to look at. My goal is just to live life more authentically and with more creativity. I'm anxious to use this blog as a means of exploration!

So, for those of you who stuck with me this long, I say thanks and I hope we have a great new year of blessings and learning!

Unconventional Christmas Wrapping

Christmas is almost here, and once again I'm writing about how to celebrate it unconventionally. Why be normal, right? This year I have been collecting cool wrapping ideas. Thanks to my new Pinterest site, I have a handy spot to gather my thoughts! Be sure and check it out here. Anyway, hope you are inspired.

Recently, I learned about Furoshiki and LOVE it! Furoshiki is an ancient Japanese tradition of wrapping and carrying items in fabric. Stop and imagine the possibilities of that!! There is no end to fabric patterns and folding techniques. I also love that the fabrics are reusable and can be a gift in themselves.

These decorated clothespins are so adorable!!

My favorite idea for wrapping is using origami inspired folding. It feeds my obsession with origami and the small details make a gift so special. Personally, I've spent quite a bit of time learning folding techniques. Not sure what Mark must think about all the tiny boxes around our apartment. But, I'm determined to have an origami Christmas!!

Found this via Tumblr today! Its the Taiwan Noodle House via the Contemporist. I was astonished by the dark walls, intricately covered with noodle bowls. Isn't it fantastic?

P.S. I decided to spiffy up the look of this blog, but I may still change a few things. Consider it my virtual remodeling. You know, its like a new coat of paint and rearranging of the furniture.

Hello all! I'm so glad to be back, I've been sick for over two weeks and I'm fed up with it!! Of course, the bug hit Liam and Mark, too. Overall, it hasn't been much fun around my little home. Luckily, I've discovered a few things that have brought a smile to my face and I wanted to share them. They are not related in any way; I just enjoy them.

First, these freshly colored pillows by Leah Duncan. I can picture many rooms where these pillows would fit right in. They are so lively!

Next, I've been pouring over Anthology Magazine. Its so beautiful! In the last year, I've become disillusioned with so many design mags, but this one gets it just right. What is it about being able to thumb through a beautiful periodical? Online photos just aren't the same.

Finally, (remember I said these things didn't relate to one another) I'm in love with this flash mob video! I admit a fan of the flash mob....even if it is overdone. This one is in a Mumbai train station and is too much fun. The music is addictive and fun everyone is having is contagious. Hope you enjoy it!

Recently, I rediscovered "Rock Lobster" by the B-52's (it appeals to my ridiculous sense of humor). Anyway, one of my favorite parts is the lyric, "There goes a narwhal!" For the longest time I didn't even know what a narwhal was! Well, I was thumbing through an Anthropologie magazine, and what do I see? A narwhal Christmas ornament!! Ha ha, I must have one. I'm also loving the funny little guy below.

This weekend, I had one of those OMG moments. I was reading through a fabulous blog called, Miss Moss and found this incredible home. I think my heart skipped a beat! It was featured in Life Magazine in 1958. The house was designed by Donald E. Hustad as his own residence.

Presenting the most awesome wall I've seen in a while! When I ran across it, I had to do a double take. Fantastic!! Personally, I sort of feel that the montage wall has been done to death on the internet, but this collection jumps off the screen.

Oh, how I love vintage pictures. The colors, styles of dress, and old cars. They really capture my imagination. I found a Flickr site that reinvigorated that love; last night. Midwestern Femme is an entire collection of found photos and magazines. Some photos go back more than a hundred years. My favorite are the 20th century color pics. They are wonderfully fun to scroll through.

Coffee and Design

Yesterday morning I got a chance to experience two of my favorite things, good coffee and good design! It was great way to start the day:) Anyway, I read about a new restaurant/coffee house in Houston, called Down House. Of course, that alone sounds inviting to me; but when I heard that many of the furnishings were designed by Becki and Jur Van Der Oord of Installations Antiques...I got over there as quick as I could! (Check out some pictures of Installations here). Well, I wasn't disappointed.

The rich blue walls blend beautifully with leather and wood seating, and industrial lighting. What I especially loved about the design was that it is subtle...not too overdone.

BTW, Mark and I loved our coffee and breakfast and we're anxious to return and check out their dinner menu. So if there are any volunteer babysitters, just let me know!

Hello patient readers! Summer time has been crazy around here, so I haven't been keeping in touch. I realize I've become like that guy you go out with a couple of times, have a great time, and then never hear from again. You're always left wondering, "What did I do?" But really, its not all of you, its me. I'm in a weird place, right now and all of that;)

I am happy to be back with the work of Sasha Prood. She is an illustrator and graphic designer, amongst other things. I spent quite a bit of time scrolling through her charming shop and portfolio and was especially smitten with her little owls!

Print has become one of my favorite art mediums recently, partially because I love the beautiful texture it creates: like in the picture above.

Competing Philosophies

I've always had an interest in philosophy, but lately I'm passionate about it. I tend to spend any free time I have studying the words and thoughts that are the foundation of our culture. (This is part of the reason why I haven't been blogging as much). Unfortunately, I find "philosophy" isn't a great conversation starter with most people. So, I was glad to find this today. This week I find myself asking, what is the appropriate response to the passing of an ingenious artist? I was sad to read of the passing of Cy Twombly on Tuesday. Strange that I wrote about him just recently and discovered that I was introducing his work to many of you.

Well, yesterday I felt called to visit the Twombly museum here in Houston, as a personal memorial. (If any of you visit Houston, I highly recommend paying a visit). Its white and sun-drenched walls make Twombly's work come alive. Most especially the colossal "Say Goodbye, Catullus, to the Shores of Asia Minor". Wow! What a wonderful tribute.

Standing in front of the paintings, I allowed myself to be filled with emotions of joy and life. I always feel that way about Twombly's work. Maybe my "memorial" was self-centered, since I mostly thought about how I felt. Unfortunately, I didn't know another way to pay tribute to a person I never met. But, an artists work is an expression of their true selves. So, maybe allowing it to speak to me is a great tribute indeed?

Summer DIY

Hello everyone. Long time no write! Life has been VERY crazy lately. Last week Liam started a summer camp, so I finally had time to organize our new place a little better and unpack more. This week, he is there again, and I am finally giving myself to do something fun and creative for a change. Like, for example getting back to blogging!

I spent this morning surfing the web and found this beautiful DIY on Lotta Jansdotter's site. I love her so much and I love the simple beauty of these painted cups.

My First School Year

In my last post, I wrote about my decision to homeschool Liam. I had not written about it before, because it was sort of an experiment and I didn't know how it would go. Well, now we are approaching the end of the first year and I can say its been a VERY interesting undertaking. I've learned much more about my son and about myself than I knew was possible! It has been challenging at times and I'm busier than ever, but I'm so thankful to have gone through this process. I tell you what, nothing will ever replace the feeling of listening to your little one read for the first time and know that YOU helped him get there. Wow!!

The funny part comes when you start thinking about how many things you could teach your child. I mean the possibilities are endless, right? Mark and I sit around discussing that all the time. That's why I just about died this morning when I saw these Unhappy Hipster posts. Hilarious!!

Maira Kalman And The Library

As a true lover of books and mother who teaches her child at home (Yes, that's right!) I LOVE libraries! I want to inspire Liam to love books too, so I'm fawning over these photos of Maira Kalman's designs in a New York public school library. Ooh, I love when two of my favorite things meet! Kalman and a library, yeah!

Several artists collaborated with a few Bronx schools to design their libraries. The results are fantastic! Check out the video to get a behind-the-scenes view of Kalman's process. Love it:)

There are very few things I am sentimental about. I don't always understand why. But, one of those things is the song Moon River. I first heard it as the intro to Breakfast at Tiffany's, one of my most beloved movies. Then I fell in love with the song as Audrey Hepburn sang it so sweetly. while sitting at her window. Ahhhh....

I've heard many other versions of Moon River, but in my mind; none compared to "Holly Golightly's". Today, on the other hand; I may have found a cover that gets pretty close! I've been swooning over the wonder voices of The Honey Trees, all evening:)

Moving is tough! I know I've been gone for a while, but I've been moving into our new apartment. We didn't bring everything we own, since this will only be a temporary place. Still, it takes a lot of time! The minimalist in me wishes I could get rid of all possessions, except the most basic of furnishings...and some art of course. I came across this German apartment and was inspired by its absolute simplicity. I bet this place could be packed up in no time. Although, where else would one find such an incredible home?

I am a big fan of built-ins, especially if they have such beautiful texture:)

I think I just took two steps back on my, trying to include more "pretty" things in my home. Shoot! It isn't very easy!!

Prettiest Bathroom

If you read this blog regularly, you know I don't often write about "pretty" things. I have trouble with pretty, but I'm working on it. As I prepare to move, I'm challenging myself to do things differently. Including, allowing my home to be softer. I found this inspiring space on Tumblr and I love it! This bathroom is subtly pretty and inspiring.

I'm crazy about all the different textures and the simple color scheme with a touch of amazing green wallpaper! Don't you love it?! These photos are from an amazing blog called The Marion House Book. Its full of many drool-worthy photos and ideas, so be sure to read it.

In My Head: Ocean Creatures

Once again, I am carrying thoughts and visions in my head of a specific nature. I like writing these "In My Head" articles, because it allows my brain to let go of these recurring thoughts. Sorry to be using all of you for my own therapy;)
My eye is caught by the organic and strange shapes of ocean creatures. They're so mysterious and beautiful! Actually, when I was a little kid; I used to read everything I could about ocean life. Now, I wonder how these shapes can be reinterpreted into furnishings and jewelry, too!

First, I found these colorful anemone bowls made by Element Clay Studio. Wouldn't a collection of these spiny creatures light up any room?

Preparing For New Spaces

I'M MOVING!!!!

Hooray! For months now, we have been ready to move to a new home. We worked on unfinished projects for a while and then waited on a dying housing market. Well, although we haven't sold our house (we are leasing it); we are finally able to move on. For the time being, we will live in a temporary space until we make a final decision of where we want to go. Its fine, I'm just ready to do something...anything!

What excites me most about moving, is the new challenge of decorating a new space. Surely, nobody is surprised by this, right? You can count on me mentioning this regularly, for the next few weeks:)

Today, I'm inspired by this home office. I like its simplicity and warmth. Of course, I like the crazy desk legs. But, mostly I'm drawn to its small footprint. I mean, the desk is placed in what looks like remnant space. Since, I will be in an apartment for a few months, I won't really have a dedicated study. This room allows for that w/out losing style.

Dada Diddle

Liam recently memorized one of my favorite nursery rhymes, Hey diddle, diddle....

This little rhyme is so vivid with unusual images and has such a catchy rhythm. For fun, I entered it into a website called Dada poetry generator. You may be saying, what is Dada? In short, it was an anti-establishment movement in art and writing that began in Europe, after WWI. Read more here. One practice of Dada writing was to cut out random words from newspapers and let a poem "fall together".

Given how much I love randomness, I had to try it. I wondered how a child's poem would read using this method. So, here it is!

Ha! Awesome. I think I am going to read this to Liam and have him cut out words and scramble them together. That should keep a 6 year old entertained for quite a while! If any of you decide to try making your own poem, be sure and show it to me:)

How Do You Inspire A Child?

I wonder about this all the time and I think a great place to start is with a creative environment. Since becoming a mommy, I'm constantly reminded of my own childhood. Back then, parts of my house would turn into a castle or maybe a spaceship. What I wished for the most was a window seat, where I could sit and let my long hair out the window, just like Rupunzel.

The possibilities for making imaginative spaces for kids are endless. Here are few samples of some I love!

Imagine how many puppet shows could happen here, and what a great place to hide! I'm getting way too excited about this aren't I? Maybe, I'm the one who really likes these rooms and use inspiration for kids as an excuse.

I'm crazy about this color scheme. Its mature and fun at the same time!

I'm still reminiscing a bit about Liam. Several months ago, I noticed he started showing interest in using my camera. I'm sure it isn't because I carry it with me all the time! So, I hesitantly let him use it. I was surprised to see how wonderful his photos were! I mean his point of view is so different than anything I would imagine. His pics consist of his favorite things like puddles and toy trucks, but also of curious places he is unfamiliar with and little moments that only children notice. The title of this post comes from something Liam said after one of his photo shoots, "Mama, I'm a photography".

This boy's most loved possessions are his toy cars.

This is the ceiling of an elevator. Love the abstract feeling of it...unfortunately, I forgot to turn off the date feature. (I bought a small point-and-shoot camera for him to use instead of my Nikon)

In Liam's shoots, there have been many unfortunate pictures of me. So, now I'm reluctant to let him take more...too scary!

I think these are my favorite. Sometimes while scrolling through the camera memory, these funny self-portraits pop up. They make me laugh every time!!

Last week, my little Liam turned 6 years old! He is so ready to be big, and ready to do big boy things. It has left me thinking about the days of Liam being a silly little toddler. Although, he could be a handful; he was a sweet little guy:) Why is it kids are always so ready to move forward and parents struggle to keep up? Lately, I've been reading several blogs that are written by very creative parents and I love how inspiring and tender they are. I thought I would share a few of them.

Ish and Chi is a beautiful blog about design and fashion, but also has some very inspiring ideas for children's decor. Be sure and check out this lucky boy's nursery!!

La Belle Baleine shares the life of a charming family in North Carolina. I love that it features so many fun kid-friendly shops, but I mostly love the honest comments about being a new parent.

Finally, there's Pepito mi Corazon. I love that name!! The blog is in French, but even if you don't speak the language, you'll be smitten with the beautiful photos. Also, check out their shop of kids clothing, called Guapito. So many cool things.

Happy Friday! My week has been pretty crazy and I'm ready to relax a bit. My guess, many of you are ready to do the same. If you are looking for a fun thing to do, check out Maira Kalman's, Illuminations of a Crazy World exhibit. Its being hosted by the Jewish Museum of New York. Just reading the website is fun. It shows many of her unique paintings along with a few narrated comments.

I am crazy about Kalman's crazy world! Its just the right kind of crazy for me;)

Counting The Minutes!

I practically live and breathe Radiohead, and can hardly wait for their new album! For now, I have been watching this video over and over. Its fantastic!! The choreography is so outlandish, I can't turn away.

I once went to a concert, where too much of the audience was sitting quietly, when they should have been on their feet dancing. Suddenly, a guy stands up and starts dancing as erratically as in this video. I think the entire audience stopped to watch him. I watched, hoping someone would put him on stage. The unpredictability of his movements and willingness to express himself were electrifying. It was awesome!

Today is the Bloggers Day of Silence. It was organized to encourage support for Japan's relief effort. So, please donate whatever you can to help. I have been struggling with blogging this week, because writing about design feels so irrelevant right now. Obviously, I am not the only blogger who feels this way. There are times to think of much higher things, like the love of humanity.

I would ask something else of everyone reading this. Please use the time you would normally spend reading this, or any other blog; on sincere prayer for Japan. Please pray for mercy and protection from the chaos that has been unleashed there.

Also, I would hope that this time reminds ALL of us to love our own family and friends a little more. Today, lets hug our kids a little tighter, call and chat with distant relatives, and smile at our neighbors. Reflect on things that are truly important to you. We've seen this past week, that material things are so fleeting. What do you want your life to really be about? Whatever it is, don't hesitate anymore!

Fabulous Walls from Lonny

While scrolling through the most recent edition of Lonny magazine, I noticed a subtle feature over and over. Almost every interior had some amazing wall treatments. Here are a few of my favorites.

The room above feels like someone climbed into my subconscious, gathered everything they could find and used it to decorate this space...its almost eery. I need to live here!!!

I love the unusual mix of mismatched prints and unique mirrors. Its so unpredictable, so it keeps the room feeling fresh. What I REALLY love about this room is the ceiling! Wow, its so fantastic. Personally, I hate low white ceilings, because they just bring a room down. Instead, this ceiling actually makes the space.

Black lacquer cabinets in the kitchen? Yes!!

I had to do a double-take on this wall. Right in the middle is a flat-screen television. A stylish wall while you watch TV....nice.

I love the combination of old and new in this dining room. Especially the large traditional mirror, leaning against the wall. Truly beautiful!

A Writer's Refuge

Where does a great storyteller and writer get inspired? What feeds the minds that shape new environments and situations? Writers give us part of our history, education, and entertainment, and sometimes even change the world with their words.

The entire process of writing is very intriguing to me. Of course, as a designer and pragmatist; I find myself also wondering about Where a writer works when creating something new. I believe that the environment we choose for ourselves can affect our thoughts and actions. So, when I saw Re-nest's photos of famous writers' work spaces; I almost jumped out of my seat! They are fantastic!!

The pictures above are of Roald Dahl's hut. Why is it, that the yellow door and cozy clutter are just what I would have imagined for the creator of Willy Wonka and the fantastic Mr. Fox?

Mark Twain's space. He is my personal favorite. No matter how many books I read or how old I get, I still love none more than Huckleberry Finn:)

Thoreau's cabin at Walden Pond. I thinks this proves that living with simplicity allows the mind to think clearly. Talk about an environment that inspired world changing words!!

I'm anxiously awaiting the premiere of "Secrets from a Stylist", on Saturday! I don't know about many of you, but I sort of gave up on design on television a few years ago. Compared to what goes on in the blog world, decorating shows really fall flat. That's why I'm ready to see Emily Henderson (winner of Design Star) at work. Her work is modern, fun, and aesthetically pleasing...woohoo!

I'm anxious to share some amazing light fixtures I've been admiring for the last week. Actually, more than admiring, lusting! I really want these!!!

A single bulb and a collection of wire spheres, so simple and so beautiful. I can't tell you where this fixture came from but you can find more photos of this incredible place here.

The newest source for lighting lust, comes from Wo and We Collection. These unique fixtures are an industrial dream.

Not only is this fixture to die for, but so is every detail in this room! The black walls are perfectly complemented by the white bedding with red trim. Ahhh, feels like home:)

Last night I stayed up entirely too late, watching a biopic about photographer David Bailey on the Sundance Channel. If like me, you are unfamiliar with this name; you may be surprised to know that you are familiar with some of his photographs. Bailey first came to prominence with his work for British Vogue, in the sixties. During the time of a youth revolution in London, Bailey also broke with convention in fashion photography and started a sort of revolution of his own. Magazines could no longer be pretentious images that catered to only the elite. Instead, they had to appeal to a younger generation who used fashion as a means of self-expression.

Its Friday and time for another Off-beat market. Check out the furniture of Colin Schaelli. Honestly, these images say it all and don't need me to add much more. Wow!

I posted this photo on my Tumblr site and it sort of stuck in my mind. I had to research where it came from and was glad to find this fantastically minimal series of furnishings.

Occasionally, I'm asked why something as stark as this furniture; appeals to me. What about some color or decorative details? Here's the thing, when there is a beautiful form without too much decoration, my imagination has the freedom to fill in the details. An overly decorated piece can become static in a way, it is what it is. Is this making sense or am I rambling? Maybe, I just don't like being told what to think:) I would love to know how some of you feel about this.

High Gloss Magazine Debut

Many of you may have heard of High Gloss magazine's debut, yesterday. If you haven't, see it here. It is the brain child of my friend and Houston blogger, Paloma Contreras. What a labor of love and it has paid off!!

The debut issue also features the work of another friend and Houston designer, Sally Wheat. I'm loving this place. Sally has such a great collector's eye and an appreciation for modern art, her interiors are so fresh!

Okay, I'm breaking out the proud mommy on this one. I was reading Shutter Sisters and found a site called Picasion.com. Its a super simple way of making GIF's from your photos, which is something I've wanted to do; but have been too lazy to learn. Now, I don't have to learn! Hooray!!

Once Upon A Time

While in school, I remember making silly little origami sculptures. I never understood the point, so I soon forgot all about them. Recently, that has changed. I can't stop thinking about the art of origami and its simple beauty. There is something so profound about a sheet of paper coming to life with just a few folds. I love it!

My love and fascination for chairs has been no secret on this blog. My other love is finding shopping sites that may be off the radar. You can imagine how excited I was when I found Sally Nencini's site, since it combines both! She has a bespoke upholstery shop based in London. Vintage chairs are given wonderful makeovers with very unique fabrics and details.

January 11th marks the beginning of my new year. It is the anniversary of the passing of my Dad and the end of a very tumultuous year. In almost every sense, my life was turned upside down and inside out. In fact, I spent much of that time avoiding this blog; because I couldn't bring myself to express all that was going on.
Funny enough, I feel 2010 was a very difficult time for many, many people, not just me. Because of that, I have spent ALOT of time soul searching and in prayer. I've been trying to answer the question, "Now what?"
One very good thing about trying times, is that you often come out of them stronger and more grounded. Thankfully, I feel that is true for me at this time.
So, why am I saying all this; you might ask. Partly, to explain where I was last year and partly to begin a new year of change.
I will be making changes to this blog that match the changes in my life. I am a very different person than when I first began Carolina Eclectic so I have to express different ideas.
I will still write about interior design, just in a slightly different manner. I will also write about art and explore where creativity comes from.
I want to understand how design can be used to express your true inner-self and to uplift your soul. Also, I have been allowing myself to branch out into other creative endeavors that I have always loved, but felt intimidated by. More on this later.
Another change I am making is to my secondary blog, Random Thoughts. I have ignored it even more than this one! The truth is, "Random Thoughts" was a sort of love letter to my Daddy. I wanted to post things I thought his eccentric sense of humor might enjoy, but because of his long illness; could not.
So, when he passed, my inspiration for it seemed to die too. I've decided to officially put it to rest. I'm going to leave it up, but I just don't know what to say anymore.
In its place, I began a Tumblr site. Taking a line from this poem, I called it "A Volar". Which means, "To take flight". That's what I hope to do this year. Soar with hope and newly found inspiration:) I really have been enjoying it! In it I can express my own eccentric ideas freely. If I could open up my mind for everyone to see, I think it would look like this site. So, stop on by if you like.
Okay, thanks for those of you who bothered to read all this and thanks to all of you who kept reading throughout such a tough year. I pray that 2011 will be brighter for all of you, too!

I often think about gathering the catalogs that clutter my mailbox and shipping them back where they came from. Just like the old Seinfeld episode when Kramer boycotts the post office. But! This week, the new West Elm catalog made me rethink that plan. The colors and patterns are wonderful, and I love the photos too!

Shopping Off The Beaten Path

Hello everyone! I'm so excited to share the goodies I found this past weekend. As I mentioned yesterday, I spent a weekend in Dallas, wandering and finding new and interesting things. Perhaps my favorite find was the shops of the lower Greenville area, along Henderson ave. They are a funky mix of vintage furniture and decorative accessories sourced from independent designers. They are so fresh! In fact, most of these shops have been in business less than two years.

Our first stop was Sputnik Modern. Although, not a large shop; its packed with very cool and original mid-century furnishings. Ahh, heaven for a vintage lover like me:) I think I loved most, the collection of leather chairs. Beautiful!

I wish I could move in here. I'm sure they wouldn't mind, right?

If, Sputnik does not have enough mod furniture for you; go across the street to their second shop called Form. Also, both of these stores can be found on 1st Dibs.

Next, we stopped at a very unique jewelry boutique called; The Shining. All the intriguing pieces sold here are designed by independent jewelry designers. If you gotta have jewelry like no one else, this is your place. I would have liked to have taken everything there home with me.

The showroom is very minimal and mostly white, but very welcoming. Everything in it has such a beautiful texture.

Finally, we stopped at We Are 1976.

This is such a fun store! Its like taking everything that's great about Etsy and placing it in your favorite corner store. Again, the pieces here are made by smaller independent designers from around the world. There's more cool things in this place than I have time to describe.

If you are out "last minute" Christmas shopping, this is a great place to find unique gifts at great prices. P.S. be sure and stop at The Pearl Cup Espresso bar for a very delicious cup of coffee. Trust me, you won't regret it.

Frida Kahlo: I Will Never Forget You

Last weekend, Mark and I spent our anniversary in Dallas. (Kid free!!) My husband is so sweet, that while there; he willingly wandered through countless galleries and furniture stores with me. Thank you, Sweetie:) Anyway, I stumbled upon PDNB Gallery and found an exhibition of Frida Kahlo portraits taken by various photographers. Wow, I was so excited! Frida has been such an inspiration to me since I was a teenager. Aside, from our shared heritage; I always aspire to be as unique and bold as she was. My motto is, WWFD. (What Would Frida Do? For those of you too young to know what I'm talking about). The sad thing is, I have never had the pleasure of seeing her paintings in person! That's why this exhibition was a must-see.

Some of Frida's most iconic photos are part of this collection and some photos I have never seen before. They are worth stopping by to see. The exhibition closes on January 1, so don't miss it! Merry Christmas! I would like to say that before I write the rest of the article. You may be wondering why. Well, again we find ourselves at a time of year, I don't really like. Ahhhhh! How do I convey my feelings? As a Christian, I most definitely observe the meaning of Christmas and am grateful for all it includes. But, I DON'T LIKE THE DECORATING! Pretty much every year I say the same thing on this blog. So some of you may have heard this before. Sorry for that. For some reason, I always feel pressured to write something Christmas-y, even though; I really don't want to. So, as a way to deal with that dilemma, I write about small details that I do like. (You may also notice that I tend to put this off for as long as I can).

I haven't figured out why Christmas decorating disturbs me so much. I think its because it often seems tacky or forced. I don't like doing things just because it is "expected" of me or because everyone does it. Perhaps I need therapy?

Okay, enough! I really don't like being negative, so I am concentrating on what I do like. Here are a few details that are very beautiful and unique.

One of my favorite parts of Christmas, is the gift wrapping. Every year I try to think of some new and unusual way of presenting gifts. I found these adorable pom-poms via Bugs and Fishes, here. She includes a tutorial and many more gift wrapping ideas.

Happy Monday! I spent my entire weekend away from home with my wonderful husband of 11 years! We had a wonderful time, but I didn't have much time to post today. So, I'm borrowing this dizzy inspiration from someone else. It takes me back to my childhood and how much I loved mobiles. Maybe, adults would benefit from having beautiful mobiles around, to remind us to let loose and have more whimsey in our lives. What do you think?

Dreaming of The Black Pearl

I know what you're thinking. "Oh, the Johnny Depp dreams again". Who me? Never...o.k. maybe. But that really isn't what I meant, by this title. Its actually the name of this gorgeous townhome in Rotterdam. A total reformation of this century old building has resulted in an amazingly innovative home. I think my favorite detail is the bright green wall on the exterior. It looks like some sort of fabric, but I wasn't able to find any info. about it. Its awesome, though!!

This morning I was greeted by these ghostly images, found via Wo and We. What attracts me to them, is the thought that perhaps there are other realities going on around us; but they are invisible to the naked eye. Maybe the artist is allowing us to peek at this other world!

Thanks for visiting my home again! As you can see its coming along quite nicely. Having already built the kitchen and the dining room, its time for my personal favorite space; the living room. I know most people say they love the kitchen best, but I'm going to be honest; I'm a terrible cook and don't enjoy that one bit. I love t.v. and sitting with my family chatting or playing games! Sorry Mom:(

So, when you come to my house be prepared for take-out. On the other hand, in spaces like these; wouldn't you want to hang out for a great movie or some coffee and conversation? That's the way to fully appreciate beautiful rooms like these...if you ask me.

Growing up, Sunday mornings were reserved for church, but in the afternoons my dad and I would always sit down for a Sunday movie. In the 80's, before anyone had more than 20 channels or so (Yikes!!) there was usually some sort of "family movie" showing on Sunday. It would be a classic story like The Prince and the Pauper or maybe, Heidi. I can't tell you how eagerly I waited for those films! They were like candy for a kid's imagination! Of course, what I also loved was spending the time with my Papi. Just me and him:) I've been thinking about that a lot lately.

Now, I realize that all of you reading this don't have the time to sit and share an entire movie with me; (although that would be awesome), so I'm sharing a short video instead! Besides being a movie buff, I love video as an art form. This video, found via Booooooom ; is actually a Japanese add featuring the music of She & Him . Its fantastic!

Eclectic House Inspiration

Happy Friday everyone! Thanks for following the construction of my virtual home this week. I'm taking off early on building it, but thought I would share another fantastic and eclectic home that will inspire. I'll be back to work on my own place next week. (I'm giving myself a three day weekend!)

What I most love about this home is the way the family lives with art. Even the young children are taught to care and appreciate it. Personally, I feel its important to have a creative home for kids to grow up in.

Eclectic House: Dining room

Room number two of my eclectic house, is the dining room! This is a sort of controversial room in many modern homes. So many of us rarely sit down for formal meals anymore which begs the question, are they necessary? In the last year or so, I've personally had a change of heart about this issue. I think because I spent the last 5 years in a house that is very "open concept" and without a formal dining space, I've grown weary of not having that option. Its difficult to have many people over, because there's no where to put them! Maybe its a sign of getting older, but I want to have a place where my family can enjoy a quiet meal together in a beautiful environment. Needless to say, I am now Pro-dining room! My only requirement is that it not be the old-fashioned formal room that the kids could never walk into! Make it a creative and welcoming space (even for pesky little boys)

I know we've been seeing chalkboard walls for a couple of years now, but I'm still LOVING them:)

If I could show photos of what goes on in my dreams, one of them would look just like this!

My favorite detail in this room is the charming art on the back wall. I'm not sure if its a photo or painting. Its a very simple piece but a tasteful way of displaying a personal photo. Not easy to do.

I'm building a virtual house, room by room. I think on the inside I'm a frustrated home builder. So, my first step to fulfilling my housing development dreams is to collect ideas of what I would like to see. Of course what would these houses be but eclectic! The question remains, would anyone buy into my vision?

Color and Grace in Houston

This week has been quite eventful and exciting in Houston. We were fortunate to have several design legends in town Miles Redd, Marjorie Skouras, and Jonathan Adler. I know, right?! Its been decorator heaven around here lately.

On Wednesday, I attended the Fall Market at the Houston Decorative Center. PaperCity hosted a panel discussion on the inspirations of art and design. It was so exciting to see Miles Redd and Marjorie Skouras discuss how they started in design, what influences them, and how they go about bringing together their vision. Fantastic!
